By evening of the following day, a rather large buffet style meal had been gathered in the center of town. Almost the entire village had been rebuilt since the inhabitants had been taking shifts on repairs. Mel stood to Princess Sally's left on a lifted platform, he looked out at the gathering Mobians and waved to his caretakers and some of the gathered children. Sally was speaking to the group and he was mostly ignoring her words until she had mentioned his name and the crowd applauded. He looked over to see her motion for him to step forward. He sighed and moved to stand at the edge of the platform, smiling as the crowd cheered.
"From Agent Mel Lightfox's efforts, Doctor Robotnik will be licking his wounds. This will give us a chance to strengthen our homes and plan for the next attack. It is with great pleasure that I make him an honorary Freedom Fighter." He turned his head to look at her and tilted his head. "If you manage to return here, you will always be welcome as one of us." She took his hand in hers, placing a gold medallion and smiled, shaking his hand. The crowd erupted in cheers and he scratched the back of his head with a laugh. When she let go, he attached the medallion to his ammo belt and jumped down from the platform only to be swarmed by the many faces of the children he had met at Shane's home. Many were hugging his limbs and Josie had taken it upon herself to scale up his back to get to sit on his shoulders. He was glad that his back quills were still dull and growing in, but quickly pushed his red hair against his head and flattening out the stray quills that hid inside. The blue cat let out a squeal of laughter as her fur turned the same shade brown as his.
"Sorry about that Agent. She has a habit of ignoring personal space on people she likes." The smooth voice of a black Chameleon said as he made his way through the children. He gave the girl a look and she sheepishly ducked behind his head, her tiny fingers gripping his ears to keep her balance. The Chameleon brought his hand forward and when Mel took the offered hand, they shook. "I'm Kit. You've met my wife Linda and our daughter Josie." A happy squeal of laughter came from the child on his brown shoulders as he used his free hand to place against her back, nervous she would fall.
"I was created in a military institution... I'm used to the idea of no personal space, but I'm more worried about a stray quill hurting her. I may keep them maintained, but I am part hedgehog and have them." He let go of Kit's hand just in time to have the bold child jump from his shoulders into her father's arms. They hugged briefly before he set her down to run to her mother who had four other children around her. Mel gave a small smile and waved before turning back to Kit. "You can call me Mel. Agent seems too formal if I'm among friends." He let out a laugh and looked down to the group of children who seemed to cling to various parts of his legs and tail. He glanced over at the large spread of food and his cheeks stained red when his stomach let a loud growl out. A plate was brought around from his back with a variety of foods on it with a fork.
"I figured the kids were going to hold you captive. So I made you a plate." Mel strained his neck to look behind him and smiled at Shane. He took the plate and began to eat while the kids followed him around as he moved slowly for them. Many of the parents and residents had come up to strike conversation, which he was happy to start. He was happily throwing banter back and forth with Sonic when a small feathered hand touched his arm.
"Excuse me, Agent." He turned his head and saw a small female falcon gently touching his arm while holding hands with a male rat. "I wanted to thank you for the other day. You saved my husband and I from that robot." He turned from the blue speedster and took her hand in his own, placing his other hand on top of hers. He gave her a small smile before letting go of her hand to shake her husband's outstretched hand.
"No need to thank me. I did what I knew was right, isn't that what being a Freedom Fighter is?" He glanced at Sonic out of the corner of his eye and winked, which gained him a snort from the speedster. She smiled and hugged him, her husband moving to pick up a small boy from the group of children that had still gathered around him.
"Daddy, this was the guy who was dressed like a mummy before Halloween. He looks much better now." The people nearby that had heard the child's outburst started laughing as he separated from the hug, his white muzzle tinted pink. He scratched at the back of his head, dislodging a few loose red quills that the children fought to take hold of.
As the night drew on, most of the children were carried off to bed by their parents so he could move freely about the remaining party goers. He watched some of the families and couples that had stayed. He could see the coyote, Antoine he reminded himself flirting with the rabbit with mechanical legs and arm from his first encounter with her. The skunk, Geoffrey was spending time with a tall black cat who was dressed in similar military attire. He noticed that Sally was talking with the large Walrus that had monitored him in the ICU. He saw Tails standing with Sonic over by the end of the buffet table, they were quickly eating and as he approached he covered his nose and wrinkled his muzzle in disgust at the smell that came from the food the two were eating.
"By the ancients... What is that putrid smell?" Both had stopped eating what looked to be hot dogs covered in a mess of brown slop with raw onions chopped throughout. Sonic held a full one out to fox which dripped some of the brown "sauce" onto his boot.
"They're my Uncle Chuck's triple bean ultra spicy chili dogs. Wanna try one?" Mel paled and moved his face from the offending smell, pushing the food gently away from him and uncovering his face. He shook his head, causing the hedgehog to shrug and consume the Chili dog in one bite. Mel stuck his tongue out and shuddered. He heard a low chuckle behind him and his ears swiveled to the sound. He turned his head to see Shadow standing behind him, ebony arms crossed across his white tuft.
"At least your creator didn't give you the fox's sense of appetite. Although you probably have a cast iron stomach like myself. Those things can peel paint from the smell alone." Shadow uncrossed his arms and moved to stand next Mel. "I guess the Princess went against my idea of ending your life, but I guess that turned out to be a good thing." Purple eyes narrowed and locked with ruby red before he turned and went to move on. Sonic set his leftover chili dog down to grab the fox's arm.
"Hey, why don't we get a picture with the three of you." Sonic shrugged his shoulders with a laugh and Shadow gave the hedgehog a look that would bore holes into concrete. Tails get a whoop, using a napkin to clean the leftover chili sauce from his face. He twisted his tails to do a short hop to stand next to the discouraged ebony hedgehog who crossed his arms again. Mel sighed and moved to stand a little behind the orange fox, placing a hand on the smaller kit's hair. Sonic ran to quick grab one of the village photographers. The two foxes smiled as the hedgehog turned his head away, but continued to watch the fox hybrid from the corner of his eye.
After the flash, Tails began to rub his eyes to not only rid himself of the dots, but due to the hour. Sally had joined them and shooed the fox kit off to bed. The photographer took a photo of Sonic and Sally with Mel as well as an action shot of Mel and Shadow pointing their unloaded pistols at the other's head with smug grins on their faces. As the photographer was packing up and the party was winding down, Mel made his way to the lifted platform and climbed up the front. He cleared his throat to get the attention of the few remaining groups. Once they were paying attention, he looked around.
"I would like to thank you all for making me feel welcome. In 36 hours I will be returning to my own dimension and I would like to ask that anyone wanting to come with me to gather your needed items and meet me at the Warp Ring at the mentioned time. Thank you again." He jumped down from the stage and could hear mummering as those leaving spoke. He made his way to Shane and Malva, who were helping to clean up.
"With how often you injure yourself. I think it might be a good idea for you to have a field medic with some battle experience." The wolf said, picking up dirty bowls and plates before walking over to the barrel of soapy water and placing them inside. Shane began to wash them and place them on a clean blanket set aside for the time to dry. Mel stood there for a minute before helping to place small bits of leftovers in containers and sealing them.
"Won't you be needed here? You're the Freedom Fighters only battle medic, aren't you?" He looked at his friend, who was giving him an annoyed look with their brown eyes.
"I am the most experienced, but not the only. I just need to gather some of my plants and I'll be there when you are expected to leave." They watched him as he sighed and nodded, finishing with cleaning up the leftovers. Malva took the last of the dirty plates over to Shane and helped clean them. Once they finished, they cleaned the tables and put them away and went in their separate directions for their homes. Shane motioned for Mel to follow him back to his home when the fox shook his head.
"I'll be there shortly, just wanna take a few minutes to myself to think." He smiled and Shane nodded, heading off to his home while Mel made his way to the flower clearing to sit. He sat down and looked up at the starry sky before closing his eyes and just relaxing his body. He thought back to the past few days that he was awake and all the destruction that had been caused by this dimension's Doctor Robotnik. He laid back in the grass and opened his eyes to stare blankly at the stars. He yawned loudly and stretched his arms above his head. It wasn't long before he had fallen asleep in the field. The only sounds around him were the crickets chirping throughout the grass.
Finally a slightly more lighthearted chapter.
